Multilingual Support in L2 Norwegian Language Education for Adults

Adult learners with limited or no prior schooling face a unique set of challenges in the second-language classroom. Standard instructional frameworks often assume a baseline of formal literacy, leaving educators and researchers searching for more equitable, effective methodologies.

In this Coffee Break, Professor Iversen will discuss how multilingual support and pedagogical translanguaging can enhance second-language learning for LESLLA learners.

Drawing on development projects conducted in Norway, he will explore the role of language helpers in supporting communication, learning, inclusion, and identity development among adult immigrant learners.

About the Presenter

Professor Jonas Yassin Iversen is interested in diversity and marginalisation in educational contexts. Drawing on critical and post-structural theories, Professor Iversen explores pedagogical questions related to cultural and linguistic diversity in schools and teacher education, minority language instruction within and beyond school, and teaching about and for Sámi and national minorities.

Professor Iversen currently teaches in primary and secondary teacher education, practical pedagogical education, and supervises the PhD programme in Educational Sciences at the University of Inland Norway.

Professor Iversen also serves as co-convenor for ECER-network 31 Language and Education, associate editor for the Nordic research journal Nordand, and co-lead the research group Diversity in Education.
